Which one do you choose though? Which console should you buy?

Between the PS4 and the Xbox One, it’s a hard choice going for one brand over the other. The PS4 has three main models, while the Xbox One has four.

The main PS4 models on the market today are the PS4 slim, which is capable of HDR playback, and the 4K-capable PS4 Pro. the Xbox One S is 4k HDR-ready, and the ultra-powerful Xbox One X has 4K HDR gameplay capability and can play games at 60 frames per second. That’s a number that would stand out to any gamer.

If you own a 4K HDR TV, a PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X would be the options for you to choose from. On a 1080p HD TV, however, the PS4 Slim or the Xbox One S would be the smarter options for you to choose from.

Let’s go through the differences to help you decide which would be the best for you.

The debate between Playstation or Xbox is now over two decades old. No one could give you a clear-cut answer then, and no one will be able to give you a clear-cut answer now. If you want to look at sales, the PS4 beats the Xbox 2:1.

Sony has always made sure that the PS4 is offered at a cheaper price point than the Xbox One, and for this generation of consoles, the PS4 has had the most exciting exclusive games.

The question of “which console offers better games” has always been a subjective one. The consensus amongst critics does tilt in favour of the PS4, though. Here’s a comparison of a few of the biggest-name exclusives on either platform.

PS4

Xbox One

Bloodborne

Halo 5

Gears of War 5

As you can see, besides the few exclusives on the Xbox One, there hasn’t really been much exclusive excitement. The PS4, on the other hand, has an array of exclusive games with more in the works like the Final Fantasy VII Remake and the Last of Us Part 2.

Software aside, the PS4 and the Xbox One are similar in terms of hardware. Base model PS4s pack more power than the Xbox One. However, the Xbox One X is the most powerful console available in terms of machinery and supports true 4K titles, unlike the PS4 Pro, which upscales 2K content to 4K through a method called checkerboarding. The Xbox One X and the Xbox One S offer 4K Blu-ray players which Sony took a pass on with the PS4, which adds some extra value to owning a higher-end Xbox One model. Both consoles on the inside have AMD Jaguar octa-core CPUs. The Xbox One X has a faster GPU than the PS4, and more RAM at 12GB versus the PS4 Pro’s 8GB. If your only concern is with the specs of the console, and you have no interest in the exclusive titles that Sony offers, the Xbox One X does provide better value.

In terms of connectivity, the PS4 supports internal hard drive upgrades, while the Xbox One does not. You can use external hard drives on both consoles, but the Xbox One has more ports to offer. Both consoles come standard with a 500GB hard drive, but some heavy users might not think that’s enough.

That’s where PS4 triumphs over the Xbox One due to its upgradeability. The Xbox One has two HDMI ports, two USB 3.0 ports, IR output, optical audio out, and Ethernet ports. Both the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro have a single USB port at the back, with two in front, with a single HDMI out port. The Pro has one optical audio out port, while the Slim does not. Network compatibility on either the Xbox One or the PS4 should not be a problem, as they both support 802.11 ac WiFi and Gigabit Ethernet.

The Xbox One does shine in terms of smart home integration, as Microsoft announced support for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant in 2018. This means your Xbox can communicate with Amazon’s line of Echo smart speakers or other Alexa-enabled devices as a practical alternative to using voice commands through the Xbox Kinect “(which has kinda died out by now, to be honest).

In terms of user-friendliness, there will always be a battle between Team Playstation and Team Xbox. The Xbox interface has gone from messy to customisable over the years. The PS4 still wins in terms of capturing gameplay and sharing it and has always been winning in terms of interface, as it still feels simpler and easier to navigate. The PS4 interface is more user-friendly, at the end of the day, and has better gameplay sharing options.

If you’re interested in exploring the gaming world through virtual reality (VR), you only have one choice, the PS4. Tetris Effect and Resident Evil 7 are highlights amongst the PSVR lineup, which has been, and seems like it will continue to grow over time.

In terms of value, you get a better deal with the Xbox One X in terms of value per unit of currency spent. The Xbox One X is more powerful than the PS4 and includes a 4K Blu-ray player. The Xbox One also offers better native backward compatibility than the PS4, so you could play a variety of Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on your Xbox One. If you want a base model console, the Xbox One S beats the PS4 Slim because of its 4K support capabilities.

The Xbox Design Lab allows you to customise the textured grip on Xbox One controllers. Sony’s Dualshock 4 is ergonomically superior, comes with a built-in touchpad, and an interactive light bar which adds to how the controller looks. The biggest advantage Sony’s Dualshock 4 controllers have over the Xbox One controllers is micro-USB charging support right out of the box. Xbox One owners need to have a stash of AA batteries, or you could buy a charging kit for rechargeable AA batteries, which is a bummer and an inconvenience.

Both consoles have their ups and downs, however, you might want to consider waiting for the next-gen groundbreaking consoles: the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. if you really want to get a console for yourself, stats, user reviews, and history, all favour Playstation over the Xbox. It does boil down to your personal preference at the end of the day, though.
