"On Monday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is testing 10 prototypes for the next iPhone. Some of these prototypes might include a curved OLED screen. So, there is a chance that the organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, familiar to TVs, might soon be introduced to iPhones. The Wall Street Journal cites its sources to be Asian manufacturers from whom Apple has asked for a large amount of OLED screens. The same sources have also said that because Apple is testing almost 10 other prototypes OLED screens in smartphones might not even be real.

What is OLED?

OLED display screens work without backlight and can display darker and deeper blacks. They are also thinner and lighter with a greater responsiveness and brighter picture quality.

Why introduce it in the new iPhone?

The general disadvantages of OLED screens will make iPhone 8 more efficient than all other models. This transformation might just be what Apple needs to increase the sales of the next iPhone. Sales for iPhones have dropped dramatically and Apple can save this line only by introducing something that is really innovative and different. Google Pixel Phones already include OLED screens, so Apple has to make the next iPhone impressive enough to win customers’ hearts.

If OLED is the desired screen type for the new iPhone, rumored to release in fall 2018, then manufacturing companies need to prepare for the greater demand. Wall Street Journal also reported that most of these screens will be brought from Samsung while others like LG Display and Sharp might also receive orders from Apple.

Although there are numerous advantages to be gained from the introduction of OLED screens, the models are still under testing. One can only hope that iPhone 8 has some really new and amazing features."
