"Lenovo Yoga Book is an innovative product and is a keyless laptop from the future. It consists of a two-in- one lit-up keypad and pressure-sensitive writing surface, with Real Pen stylus and touchscreen input. This 10.1 inch Yoga book on one side is innovative, and on the other hand, turns out to be overly complicated for many.

Lenovo Yoga Book review: Introduction

Starting the review from, what is the Lenovo Yoga Book?

This Yoga Book is:

• 10.1-inch notebook design with a width of 256.6mm, depth of 9.6mm and height of 170.8mm and weighs about 690g.

• The LCD is a touch screen which is IPS LED-backlit with a full HD (1920 x 1080) display, 400-nits

• Keyboard

The Lenovo Yoga book has a keyboard without physical keys and is known as the Halo Keyboard. To deliver more immersive typing experience, the illuminated keys give off a subtle vibration when pressed to act as haptic feedback. Anther great feature about Halo keyboard is its ability to learn your hand positioning over time and thus compensates for mistakes. If the selected keyboard is TouchPal, then it provides you with auto prediction, correction, and on- screen touch options. It also gives you that traditional and phone-like automation for typing options.

• Stylus

The Yoga book also comes with a physical stylus which is called the Real Pen. The Real Pen is used for handwriting or drawing directly onto the would-be Halo keyboard panel. It is in a sense, similar to Wacom tablet. When the key input is deactivated by pressing a button, a blank input slate with 2,048 levels of pressure comes up acting as the EMR writing surface.

Real Pen is one of the key components that makes Yoga Book so different from its counterparts. It can accept real ball-point nibs, and its nibs can be popped out and replaced with the stylus-like nib.

The Yoga Book has the capability to detect actual handwriting on paper placed on its surface and then transforms it to on-screen notes. There is a pad with magnetic clips that sits flush against the EMR writing surface. You can, however, use any paper or just press the button to the top right of the keyboard. With the pressing of the button, the illuminated keys will vanish, and you can then scroll around with the stylus tip for input.

• The learning curve is sufficiently steep and is not encouraged by many people. However, younger people will like this versatility.

Some of the people want the layout of the keyboard to be slightly different. According to them, the backspace to the top right is larger than normal but is not wide enough. So, the equal sign next to it gets hit instead. However, it is not like your fingers can't get used to of the changes in a while, thus we can say that the overall typing experience is not too bad. You can type at a relative speed if you are cool with auto-correct assistance. Not as fast as the traditional keyboard, but once you are comfortable with it, it is a wholly interactive concept and ingrains in the brain.

• OS and trackpad differences

The Yoga Book comes in two flavors of Operating Systems:

• The first option is the Android (priced at £449) or Windows (priced at £549) operating system.

• The second option available is with the Intel Atom x5-Z8550 Processor (which is a quad-core processor, up to 2.40GHz) and 4GB RAM.

The Windows option proves to be a more natural choice as the Android version does not give the feeling of the Android tablet due to its bells and whistles input. The visible difference between the two is in the trackpad markings. The Android goes with a five-dot mapped one while Windows is divided to represent left and right clicks. Using trackpad with Android feels like a bit unfamiliar and alien, and is also not responsive due to the surface coating. However, this shall not be much of a problem due to the combination of touchscreen and Android based apps.

• Battery Life

o 8,500mAh rechargeable battery

o microUSB charging, approximately 10-hours life per charge

One of the issues is due to the outdated hardware; microUSB port is slow to recharge or transfer data. The Yoga book is 9.6 mm thick and hence does not have enough space for full-size USB port. Thus charging is relatively slow to modern day phones. It takes 20 hours when plugged into a mains USB with the provided charging cable to fully recharge. And the charging lasts for around 10-hours. Standby time is exceptionally long-lasting which is approximately for days with no in-between use.
