Your laptop crashed mid-Zoom meeting? Missed your work deadlines due to blackouts? Now you ask us the question whether or not MacBook is a practical choice, considering the power outage and load shedding situation going on in the country. We say, yes, it is, and we have solid reasons for saying that.
MacBooks offer a reliable battery backup of 8-12 hours, particularly the M1, M2, and M3 models. And if you go for the M4 or M5 model, you’re good to go for a whole day. They will last you 18-24 hours with video playback or a demanding workload, while remaining unplugged.
While this is one of the major reasons for being a practical choice in Pakistan’s load shedding, there are more. Let’s read below to know more about the subject.
Why are MacBooks practical in Pakistan?
Two megacities of Pakistan, Karachi and Lahore, face 4-8 hours of load shedding on a daily basis. Some areas are exempted from it, but the majority of them face serious consequences because of it. Dying electronic appliances is just one of those consequences. A lot of times, when the power is restored, the voltage fluctuates drastically, causing damage to the electronic appliances. Unlike regular computers, this is not a problem with laptops. Laptops have their own power supply (the internal battery) and can run independently.
Now the question is, why do we choose MacBooks over all the other laptops, given the ongoing power chaos going on in the country?
Superior Battery
As mentioned earlier in the intro, MacBooks give an incredible backup of 8-24 hours (depending on the model you’ve chosen). M1, M2, M3 MacBooks give 15+ hours of real-world usage on a single charge. M4 variants (Air and Pro) give 15-22 hours of backup, and M5 variants (Air and Pro) give 18-24+ hours of backup on a single charge. This is with video playback and multitasking. If you’ll be working on light tasks, you can easily go several days without recharging.
To give you an idea of the battery capacity and power of MacBooks, we have tabulated it in Wh and mAh below. These are claims on the Apple website, but when put to real-world tests, a good majority of the notebooks exceeded these claims.

Power Efficient ‘M’ Series
The ‘M’ series processing chips are designed to be highly power-efficient, allowing you to be productive for longer hours. Even when you are working on heavier applications, you don’t need a power outlet. MacBook Air 13” (M5 chip) 53.8 Watt-hour battery will last you around 18 to 20 hours, depending on your usage. You ask us, how is that possible? That’s because the power draw is very little. When you’re multitasking with multiple tabs open, it draws 5-10W, which is very power efficient. It lets you work 18+ hours. You won’t believe it when we say this, but you can game at 7W (19fps Cyberpunk). Oh and not to mention the zero standby drain! As compared to Windows laptops, which have a 4,719 mAh (approximately 53.8 Wh battery), they last only 3-4 hours unplugged.
Minimum Power Needs
Let’s say you forgot to charge your MacBook for whatever reason. During load-shedding hours, you can easily charge it with a small UPS or inverter setup. This lets you continue your work without any interruptions. The power adapter that comes with base models will start charging at 40-60W, and at 70W, it will even enable fast charging. Air and Neo models also require very little power to recharge.
Power Surge Protection
These notebooks are designed to be future-proof, which is why the company has engineered surge protection into the charger. Voltage fluctuation of 180-260V (quite common in Pakistan) can easily be dealt with.
Windows laptops, on the other hand, can’t take too drastic voltage fluctuations when plugged in. It will end up frying the motherboard and weakening the battery in the long run.
Here is a pro tip for you! If your area faces frequent voltage fluctuations, it is better to install a UPS or power surge protector for your system (regardless of whether it is Apple or Windows) and other appliances.
Maintains Temperature in Pakistani Summers
Pakistani summers are quite intense, and thermal throttling is real. The temperatures go up to 53°C (128 °F), and when humidity and dust are also in the equation, it is no less than a nightmare. The MacBook Pro is ideal for such harsh weather conditions. It has smart fans that turn on during heavy tasks (without making much noise). And the ‘M’ series chips are sealed, so no need to deal with dust and humidity.
Please note, Air is designed for lighter tasks and has a fanless design so we cannot say the same things about it.
Stable Performance on Battery
Some laptops deliberately optimise the performance and display when running on battery. MacBooks don’t seem to agree with that. With Mac, you will not experience performance drops when running on battery, ensuring uninterrupted productivity. Not only are they highly efficient, but they also set a standard for long-lasting performance (esp. M4 and M5 models).
Cost-Benefit Math
Looking at the price of MacBooks, one might think twice before investing in them. The base models of Air and Pro start at PKR 350K, and if you want better specs, you have to pay extra. But.. but.. But..! There are several major benefits.
- It doesn’t need repairs anytime soon (you’re good for at least 2-5 years). Saving you all the repair costs.
- It has a better resale value (retains 70% of its original market value, as compared to the 30% of Windows laptops).
- Longer battery and more power-efficient, thus being a clear load-shedding winner.
And when you look at it like that, the price tag is justified.
Conclusion - Practical or Impractical
With all those reasons and math, we can safely say that MacBooks are perfect for Pakistan’s 6-12 hours of load shedding. Not only that, but they are also good to go in the harsh weather conditions, during the summer. Investing in the Apple Silicon models is a very practical solution for not missing your work deadlines due to power cuts. However, you’d need a small UPS setup for uninterrupted internet connectivity, so you can continue with your Zoom meetings and client calls.
