AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4

Apple’s back at it, you guys! It just launched the latest AirPods, and crowds are going bonkers. Especially after the massive success of the AirPods 4, this new release feels particularly tempting.

But more than curiosity, the buying crowd is confused about whether the upgrade is actually worth it. Because let’s be honest, users have felt betrayed in the past. There have been times when the company just remodelled a previous version and put up a ridiculous price tag. So yeah… nobody’s taking risks anymore.

And that’s where we step in. With this blog, we’ve shown a detailed comparison of both AirPods versions, so you can make the final call on whether to upgrade or pass. Let’s get into it.

AirPods 5 vs 4: The New Additions & Subtractions

Now, for the fun part: we’ll see how the technology used in these AirPods has actually changed. From audio to battery, here’s the scoop.

Major ANC Glow-up

Did you know that the Active Noise Cancellation headphone market is expected to grow to USD 23.24 billion in 2026? But still, with the 4th edition, Active Noise Cancellation used to be a privilege that you’d get by paying a higher price. Now, things have changed. With variant 5, you don’t really have to buy the premium model. Unlike standard variant 4, variant 5 is fully equipped with ANC. And we’re loving it!

In fact, this new model is pretty dang good at it. You can tell because it cuts 50% more noise than Edition 4 (the model featuring ANC). This feature alone could be a game-changer for working professionals. Whether you’re working in a noisy environment or taking calls during the commute, these earpods will block the noise outside.

Fun Fact: Apple is calling this the best ANC ever put in an open-ear design.

Redesigned Acoustic Architecture

AirPods 5 is borrowing some design ideas from the AirPods 3 Pro, especially in the sound department. So these new earbuds use a new acoustic design. Plus, they’ve got an updated Adaptive EQ that literally adjusts the audio by feeling how the earbuds are placed in your ear. This is a genius move. Why? Because open-ear designs don’t fit in everybody’s ears the same way.

Unlike silicone-tip buds that seal the ear canal, these are on the verge of dangling loosely. And apart from the discomfort, those open-ear designs result in sound leaks, thin bass, and an overall messed-up audio quality. But with the variant 5, you get richer audio quality, thanks to the hardware and software upgrades. It’s not a huge development from variant 4, but the sound quality of the newer variant is a lot better.

Smarter Audio & Conversation

With the Edition 5, you get two exclusive features that were non-existent in version 4. The first one is Adaptive Audio, which basically combines ANC and Transparency Mode. So now, the transition is going to be smoother. For example, if you move from a quiet room to a busy street, your earbuds can change modes automatically, without you having to manually control them.

The second exclusive upgrade is Conversation Awareness. It kicks in when you start talking. What it does is automatically lower the music and make nearby voices easier to hear. This way, you can have a quick chat without fumbling with the manual controls. And once the convo is over, the audio will return to its previous level. Now, these features are already supported in the updated ANC model of variant 4, but with variant 5, you’re getting them at the standard price.

Siri & Hands-Free Controls

According to research, Siri has around 35% of the global market share, being the world’s leading virtual assistant. Safe to say - a lot of people are dependent on it. So now, with the 5th edition, you get a much smarter Siri than in variant 4. And by smart, we mean more direct. You’ll be able to have actual short convos with Siri. The credit goes to iOS 27. But how is it possible, you might ask?

Well, Siri AI is going to dig into your data (like emails, messages, and photos) for context and then make personalized suggestions. So it comes from answering general knowledge questions. There’s also a pretty neat touchless control with the 5th edition. Through this, you can respond to Siri through a head nod or shake, instead of speaking or tapping. Version 4 can still access Siri, sure. But the AI experience seems a bit bland now. And of course, there’s no hands-free control.

Battery Longevity

When it comes to battery, the difference between version 5 and version 4 is real, but not something that’ll convince you to upgrade. See, with version 4, you get 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. In the 5th edition, it’s 4 hours. To be fair, you’re getting an hour less of listening time, but there’s also Active Noise Cancellation.

Similarly, the 4th edition has a listening time of 30 hours with a charging case. So five minutes in this case delivers an hour of listening time. This feature was not expected from a standard earbuds drop at its release. Naturally, users wanted something better with the standard edition 5. But with ANC enabled, you get 20 hours of battery life. This, for some people, can be a deal-breaker.

Live Translation

One of the sharpest differences between the two earbuds is that only one offers Live Translation. The Edition 5 has brought a lot of cool tech to the forefront. And Live Translation is probably its smartest move yet. This is because everyone needs this particular feature nowadays, not just travellers. It kind of explains why Google Translate provides a billion translations a day, serving 200 million users. But this technology merged with earbuds is a bang-on invention!

Just imagine, when the other person is speaking in some foreign language, your AirPods pick up that voice, auto-translate it, and send the transcript to your iPhone. If you reply, your iPhone can show your re-translated reply to that other person (if he is not wearing AirPods). In case both parties have AirPods 5 in their ears, the communication will be even smoother.  You just have to download the languages you want to translate into, and then ask Siri to translate. This feature bridges a massive communication gap for you.

General Design Durability

AirPods are expensive, so you’d rather choose something that can survive through your everyday sh*t. And variant 5 does just that! It’s tougher than its predecessor (IP57 compared to IP54) when it comes to dust, sweat, and water. This kind of makes them a better choice for workouts. Also, it gives you some leverage in unexpected situations (like dropping the earbuds in water).

Plus, Apple has put more focus on recycled materials this time. The version 5 is made with 40% recycled materials overall. The wireless charging case itself uses 70% recycled plastic. If we talk about the battery, it uses fully recycled cobalt. These sustainability differences might not mean a lot to some people. However, they can still make a world of difference.

Who Should Consider Upgrading & Who Should Not?

If ANC is a big part of your daily routine, with long commutes or frequent flights, Edition 5 is an easy choice. You’re getting strong noise cancellation. And unlike the previous generation, ANC is not locked to the higher-tier models. But this upgrade makes even more sense if you’re after the software features. Hands-free Siri, Adaptive Audio, Live Translation support… if these things matter to you, then have no second thoughts and go with the upgrade.

But if you can’t afford to lose that extra hour of battery that you get in version 4, then choose otherwise. Apart from the battery, there are other reasons to stick with version 4 (though not as convincing). First off, the sound quality of version 4 is better than most Apple earbuds. Sure, you’ll miss out on the cool tech that’ll probably sort your life, but version 4 is not getting outdated anytime soon.

Final Thoughts

AirPods 5 aren’t a big dramatic reinvention or anything. They’re just smarter! And honestly, smarter is better. Most of the features from version 4 have been kept as is in the new release. But features like ANC and software support have made this upgrade totally worth it. Especially when you consider the fact that both gadgets cost $129, the latter becomes more appealing. So if you’re a new buyer, just go for the version 5. And if you’re considering upgrading, there are a lot of reasons why you should.
