As we are aware of the fact that everything withholds good and bad in it, there are some useful things about MacBooks, and on the contrary, some not-so-useful things as well. Hence, we will discuss both sides of this glamorous product, keeping all the bias for Apple aside. We recommend that you do the same in order to make a rational decision! We’ll go into little detail about the specifics of each MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and talk more about MacBook in general. Let’s start with the good things first!

Pros of buying a MacBook:

  • Macs are actually cheaper, in the long run: sure, you might be thinking that we’re self-contradicting our opinion, but let us explain. The true cost of ownership should not just be calculated by the acquisition cost. It basically is the acquisition cost minus the residual value (the money you receive after you sell or trade-in the product).  Having said that, the residual value of a Mac is much higher than that of a PC. People tend to buy used Macs for a higher price due to its perks. So, even though you may give a higher initial price when you go to sell it in the market, you actually don't face a financial loss. To put that into perspective, compare the cost of a Windows PC from three years ago with what you can receive for your three-year-old Mac. The answer will pretty much be right in front of you!

  • Less probability of viruses: since there are fewer Mac products than Windows or any other company, fewer viruses are made. We’re not saying that Macs cannot catch viruses, they can, but the probability is lower. As a result, it is less of a problem for Mac users than it is for Windows users.

  • Thin and lightweight - beautiful: the latest MacBook Air is claimed to be as thin as 0.11 inches from one side. Be it MacBook Pro or Air, both of them are thin and lightweight, being as light as 1.08 Kgs. This is one of the most significant advantages of Mac, as the lightness and thinness not only signifies its beauty but also makes it easily portable literally anywhere. You don't want to carry heavy and huge laptops in your arm while you walk to class, and you wouldn't be doing that while owning a Mac. The MacBook Air just looks like another textbook in your school bag trust us on this! Moreover, it has an Aluminum body as compared to the plastic bodies in many other laptops, which beautifies the Mac even more.

  • Solid-state internal storage: the MacBook Air comes with a 128 GB flash storage. SSD storage is preferable over any other because it improves both the speed and the lifespan of the device.

  • Battery life span: all MacBooks can function from up to 9-13 hours, depending upon the model and size. That is an extremely impressive backup number because most other laptops won't provide you with such support. Having said that, remember that battery performance is impacted by several other factors including app usage, brightness, external temperature, etc.

  • Macs have some of the best screens and the Operating System (OS): the Retina display in the MacBook Pro is one of its differentiation features. The 15-inch model of the MacBook Pro has over 5 million pixels, with a 2880x1880 resolution (Sure, you can Google the specs but we just wanted to give you a practical insight!). Due to the high pixel density, images and videos produce extremely crisp images, along with sharp fine points and smooth curves.  Moreover, the Mac OS is considerably better than any other. One of the reasons being the sensational user experience, especially for the ones who are familiar with iOS and iPad. Moreover, there is a problem-free integration between macOS and iOS, making switching between devices easier. For example, a user can start doing one task on his iPhone and continue it on his Mac without synchronizing them manually.

Cons of buying a MacBook:

  • Limited Customization: PC offers more replacement and personalization opportunities than the Mac. For example, if you want to change a graphic card or a processer in your PC, you can easily unlike the Mac.

  • Limited selection: Apple offers mainly two types of Mac, MacBook Air, and Pro. While this may mean less confusion for some people, it may mean limited options for others. People tend to be trapped between very few Ma choices, and hence don't face the same diversity that they can otherwise observe in a PC.

  • Options for touch screens: many windows Pcs now come with touch screens built-in, and that is not an invention in Macs up till now. People can convert their laptops into tablets and vice versa very conveniently! You get the perk of both: the physical keyboard and the virtual one!

  • Limited Hardware upgrade options: in almost all Apple computers, the processor and memory are all integrated on a single circuit board. Hence, you may have to stick with it as you don’t have any other option except iCloud that is exclusively available on the Mac. They have limited internal storage capacity, so if you are someone that loves heavy data such as videos on your computer and are thinking to get a Mac, reconsider your decision.

  • Not meant to be a gaming computer: the fact that the MacBook Pro lacks a graphic processor shows that it is not meant for gaming purposes. Now, if you are a game lover, you may be completely put off by this fact, but you have many options out there don’t worry!

Our advice: our opinion is solely based on the fact that what are you buying the Mac for? Are you buying it just to surf on Google and make online bookings? We’d say the investment may not be worth it since you can perform the same functions on a different laptop for a really less price. Are you buying it to access software such as Photoshop or perform video editing? It should be a worthwhile investment for you, due to the advantages! Or are you buying it just for the sake of its beauty and elegance, and because you’re familiar with the “Apple world”? In that case, our answer depends upon YOUR availability of funds, if you have money to spare, go ahead, but if it is a financial burden for you, stop and buy a cheaper laptop for a while, and trade-in later on. Make a rational decision!
