The American technology Intel Corporation is the leading chip making company on the earth. 85% of the computers and laptops in the market use Intel’s chip inside. After the successful 6th generation Skylake chip, Intel has developed the 7th generation chip with a code name Kaby Lake. Kaby Lake is said to be a major development in the progress of 4K video industry. Here are the top 10 important facts about Kaby Lake CPUs you must know.
1. Pronunciation:
Majority pronounces the word Kaby Lake as “Cabbie” Lake which a mistaken practice. The correct vocalization of this CPU type is “Kay-Bee” Lake. Even though there is diversity in the way people pronounce words just like in the instances of SATA and DATA, turning a deaf ear to the ones who speak incorrectly is the best thing you could do to avoid a conflict.
2. Improved process:
The manufacturers insist that the 7th generation Kaby Lake CPUs have been through an improved manufacturing process. There were enough improvements in the previously used 14nm process to regard it as 14nm+ and experience an enhanced processor performance. Kaby Lake CPUs perform faster than the previously used Skylake version. For example, a Sklylake CPU that is capable of hitting 3.1 GHz as its top speed, an equivalent Kaby Lake CPU hits 3.5 GHz clock speed.
3. Arrival is near:
Talking to media, Chris Walker revealed that this 7th generation Kaby Lake chips have been supplied to the laptop making companies and soon the gadgets with these processors will be out. Reports have acknowledged that the gadgets that will be the first to hit the market will be the slim notebooks and the 2-in- 1 convertible laptops with the processors from 4.5 watts to 15 watts. These are expected to be available before the end of the year. Intel claims to expand the market of 7th generation chip by the start of the next year, and its usage will propagate into the Virtual Reality, gaming, etc.
4. A new naming system:
Previously Intel used to name its 4.5 Watt processors as core m3, m5, and m7 etc. A number of consumers remained confused between the name tags of i3, i5, i7 and m3, m5, m7. For the sake of simplicity, the 4.5-watt processors will be named as i5 Y and i7 Y, and the 'm' is removed. In an interesting turn of events, m3 will still be available in the Kaby Lake processors which is the cheapest processor among the 7th generation processors.
5.Video features:
The growing use of 360-degree video and 4K compelled Intel to work on providing something facilitating. The manufacturers added a new video engine to the Kaby Lake which can handle any type of modern day video demand.
The Kaby Lake chips are capable of HEVC 10-bit decode which allows the user to play back 4K and HDR video without any hindrance. The Kaby Lake chip has the ability to boost power efficiency while playing 360-degree videos and 4K videos while other functions and tasks are running behind. Thanks to the VP9 decode capability.
Not only the execution but these new processors make the video content creation a lot faster and efficient. For a rough estimate, a 4K video of a duration 1 hour could be transcoded only in 12-13 minutes. Isn’t that great?
6. Kaby Lake desktop CPUs:
While Intel declined to disclose details of the Kaby Lake desktop CPUs, we've talked to enough hardware partners to understand that Kaby Lake, once out, will be working in the existing LGA1151 motherboards. In the start of the next year, we are expecting a 200-series chipset which will replace the 100-series chipset. The Z170 can make way for the Z270, which will be adding native USB 3.1 supporting 10 Gbps and PCIe lanes.
7. Faster games with improved graphics:
The new processor chips also have something for the gamer group. The demonstration of the Kaby Lake showed that these chips are capable of running a game like “Overwatch” at 1280x720 resolution with a frame speed of 30 fps which is actually pretty good. No, we are not comparing it with the Real gaming laptops with cards like GTX.
8. Battery efficiency:
Now this is big! The Intel’s new 7th generation Kaby Lake processors are very much battery efficient. Intel has increased the battery efficiency of the chip massively as compared to the previous SkySlake generation which wasn’t bad either. Once charged full, a Laptop with a Kaby Lake processor could last for 9 hours while streaming 4K 360 degrees and 4K YouTube video. The 6th generation core processor could handle that only for 4 hours and then will ask to reconnect the charger.
9. Performance boost:
Kaby Lake processors have some of the other improved features which increase the performance, just like Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. This Turbo Boost 2.0 technology of Intel look after both the power and the performance and provide them a boost when the laptop needs it.
Another new feature is included named as Hyper-Threading Technology which is aimed to deliver 2 processing threads for each of the core to let the computer complete the task faster.
Now for the apps to work faster, Speed Shift technology is introduced in the Kaby Lake. This feature quickly settles a process on its best-operating frequency which optimizes their performance and makes the process efficient. This provides a boost to short activities such as browsing the internet.
10. What’s coming next?
What will replace Kaby Lake? Even before the release of this 7th generation chip, the generation that will be their heir apparent has already been named and it will be called Cannonlake which is supposed to hit out before the end of 2017. It is rumored that the Cannonlake will be Silicon-processed at 10nm.
