Is the New M2 MacBook Air Nearly Perfect?

The price for new MacBook Air with the latest M2 chip processor starts from £1,249 for the entry-level model and the price increases as you choose higher specifications. The available colors for this device are Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Space Grey.

The key feature of this machine is Apple’s next-generation M2 System on Chip (SoC). With the latest M2 chip, you get improved powerful performance. How? Well, M2 comprises different components such as the OctaCore processor, unified memory architecture of RAM and GPU, neural engine, encode/decode engines, secure enclave, SSD controller, and image signal processor. Since all of these are integrated into a single place, M2 can access data a lot faster than having to access data between different pools of memory. Apple claims the M2 chip is 1.4x faster than the M1 chip. The CPU performance is 18% faster, the GPU is 35% more powerful and even the Neural Engine is 40% more efficient.

In comparison to the previous MacBook Air, this device is 20% smaller than M1 Air, is sleeker, weighs merely 1.2 kg, has a fan-less design, features an upgraded 1080p webcam, and offers over 14 hours of battery life. In terms of display, you get a bigger 13.6-inch bright, colorful display with sharp details and narrow bezels. Moreover, the panel features Apple’s TrueTone technology which automatically adjusts the brightness and color temperature based on external environmental lighting conditions.

You have the upgradability options for RAM up to 16 GB and storage up to 1 TB. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a headphone jack are also included in the device. As for security, M2 MacBook Air lacks the Face ID feature but does have Touch ID support embedded into the power button for secure logins.

Rumors about the M2 MacBook Air

Due to its fan-less design structure, reports have emerged over the internet of the device overheating. Users have complained about throttling and the machine hitting extreme temperatures of up to 108 degrees Celsius under intense workloads. Another issue that has surfaced on the internet is its Solid State Drive being somewhat slower than the M1 MacBook Air.

Apart from these reports, a few cons have emerged as more and more people have reviewed the product. The foremost con is fewer port selections. Secondly, the device only supports one external screen.
