Should You Try the Trending $15 Hack to Avoid M2 MacBook Air from overheating?

If you own the latest 2022 MacBook Air M2, you know this machine does face overheating issues when using it for demanding tasks. The reason is probably its fan-less design. Not only does overheating lowers the system’s performance but can also damage components in the long run.

Now, if you are wondering why Apple would launch a newer model with such severe damage threats to the device, then let us clear the confusion. Instead of having built-in fans to cool down the device, the M2 MacBook Air has a thermal heatsink to keep the components inside cool.

The main purpose of having a heatsink instead of fans was to make the newer version sleeker and lightweight than its predecessors. Also, another plus point of not having a fan was to make the device run silently. Unfortunately, the con of overheating took over all these pros for many users who had complained about overheating. Imagine how tough can it be to keep the machine cool if someone uses it in an already hot city.

Recently, a hack performed by Youtuber Max Tech to avoid the M2 MacBook Air from overheating has been circulating over the internet. He claims, that by adding thermal pads over the fan-less notebooks’ heatsink, you can stop it from overheating, and that too under $15.

Though Max Tech performed the experiment in his video and the machine did take longer to heat up after the thermal pads were installed. However, the difference between the heating time with and without thermal pads was significantly negligible. Without the thermal pads, the device took 28 seconds to reach 108 Celsius, whereas, with thermal pads, it took MacBook Air 83 seconds to reach the same temperature.

The fix might be cheap but it is not worth even $15. Though it seems easy in the video to just unscrew the device and place the thermal pads over the heatsink, you can cause bigger damage to the device in trying to attempt the hack if not done properly. What if some sensitive electronic component gets damaged? This could cost you a lot more than $15. Moreover, by unscrewing the device on your own you would not be able to claim a warranty on the device. Hence, any damage caused by you would cost you a lot of money to get repaired.

If you are not happy with the thermal performance of the machine, then why not trade in the device for the latest 2022 version of the MacBook Pro 13-inch laptop? Not only does this has all the same features, including the M2 chip but also has built-in fans to keep the internal components cool. In short, the M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch seems to be a better investment than the M2 MacBook Air.

However, if you would still want to hold onto this device, then wait for Apple’s response to fix this issue. We are positive that Apple will look into this if a lot of reports reach them and would probably cover the issue for free under warranty. In the company’s defense, it was never intended to be used for intensive tasks.

Till then keep the device in a cool air-conditioned environment to avoid any overheating mishaps and only use this ultra-light notebook for day-to-day basic computing.
