You cannot predefine a period for your laptop’s lifespan. How you use it, how it is being handled daily and how much you use it affects how long your laptop will last. Let’s say, a brand new laptop 2023 is used daily for long hours for binge-watching Netflix shows by keeping the device on the mattress. What will happen with time is that the machine will get overheated. In turn, damaging internal components because of excessive use and using it over a mattress traps the heat from the heat vents. All this can happen within a month of purchase.

Taking the same example above, if the user had a gaming laptop instead, with a strong cooling system and powerful processor; it would have lasted much longer. As such devices are meant to be used for prolonged hours.

Factors Affecting Lifespan of Laptop

Having said that, let us have a look at some other factors that do play a great role in determining an average lifespan of a laptop:

  1.       The battery type
  2.       How do you treat the device
  3.       How often do you use it
  4.       If demanding software programs are causing overheating
  5.       Long periods of non-use can also cause the battery to drain

According to the internet, the normal life of a laptop can be somewhere around three to eight years if all the above factors are taken care of.

How to Know Your Laptop Needs an Upgrade?

Your notebook will start to show several signs before getting dead for good. Keep an eye out for the following signs to either get them fixed, updated, repaired or replaced at the right time.

  1.       If your recent hardware update is not compatible with the other components, you might want to invest in a completely new device or replace all other computer components.
  2.       For professional use, security is important. If you are still stuck with passwords as the protection method, switch to newer notebooks that use face recognition or biometrics as security logins.
  3.       A noisy fan is the first sign of an aging computer. This means you have maxed out the ability for the hardware to perform which is causing it to heat up more than usual.
  4.       If there is a problem with the laptop that requires repair, evaluate if the cost of repair is greater than replacing it with a new one. If so, buy a new device instead.
  5.       If the device demands continuous repairs, replace it with a brand new one to save yourself from the loss of productivity.
  6.       An old device may often not be able to keep up with the latest version of an application, thus causing it to take a longer time to load. You might want to consider purchasing a new device to stay up-to-date.
  7.       If the processor does not allow you to multitask without any lagging, you might want to switch to new faster performing CPUs.
  8.       A computer is on its last legs if it is taking too long to boot up or shut down.
