"Netflix is one of the most popular video streaming services and has become a worldwide sensation. With famous and record-breaking shows like Orange is the new Black and Stranger Things, Netflix has gained a huge viewer-ship. These viewers have been demanding that their favorite shows should be made available offline. The app’s most recent update will fulfill their desire. However, this feature will not be available for all of Netflix’s shows and movies.

Netflix had been opposing this change for years, saying that with time mobile networks would be sufficiently developed so that there would be no disconnection. But this year has increased the number of Netflix subscribers internationally and its service is also available in countries where mobile data connection is not as efficient as in the US. The company has added 13.2 million international subscribers this year. Thus, this feature is greatly welcomed in areas of Asia and Africa. Moreover, Netflix’s rivals like Amazon Prime video service have had offline video service for almost a year now.

However, offline videos are only available for selected shows among which are Netflix originals like Stranger Things, Orange is the new Black, The Crown and licensed shows and movies like Parks and Recreation and Spotlight. Shows not available offline include the recently released Gilmore Girls revival and shows made in partnership with the likes of Marvel and Disney. Neither can anything from BBC be downloaded - this sadly also includes Sherlock. All these shows are not available for the reason that Netflix is still getting rights for them.

The apps’ updated version is easy to use. A side menu for apps that you have already downloaded and a section for apps labeled ‘Available for download’. These downloads are made for a smaller screen and are quite small. Thus, the download speed is fast but will not be as high quality as videos available online on Netflix or videos downloaded from iTunes. Also downloading and offline watching is only available for the app not on the website. This will only make offline viewing possible only on phones or tablets and only on PCs that have an application store.

Even so this is definitely progress and Netflix will soon make a wider collection of videos available. Users all over the world are getting super-excited at this development. Although some shows are not available, some hits are and you can enjoy them until the collection is updated. "
