Let’s be real - nobody cares if your laptop has RGB, killer visuals and insane specs as long as it generates a shit ton of heat. Sure, gaming laptops cost a fortune, but those with overheating issues pose a massive collateral threat to themselves.
Enter the two MVPs of the cooling system, aka heat pipes and vapor chambers! These cooling systems are lifesavers for gamers, with one being the OG and the other, a bougie. If you want to equip your device for professional gaming, better you start with one of these firefighters.
But which one is better for you? It always comes down to questions like these with vague responses. Scroll down this guide and figure for yourself which system suits you best.
What is a Heat Pipe?
The definition of a heat pipe is hidden in its name - a duct that transports energy emission from your CPU and GPU. This thin-sealed tube technology carries the high temperature molecules all the way to the main heatsink for disposal through cooling fans. Mostly, these channels are made of copper, which is exceptional for thermal conductivity. Since one pipe can only carry a limited amount of energy, you will find a network of two to five ducts in laptops.
How Does it Work?
Each pipe contains a tiny amount of working fluid, which is alcohol or pure water. This liquid coats the interior walls of the duct. So whenever the processor produces heat, the liquid evaporates through one end, named evaporation end. The fluid fumes are transmitted through the hollow tube to another end called the condenser end. After exporting the energy to the heatsink, the fumes bounce back to their original shape as liquid, and the cycle repeats.
What is a Vapor Chamber?
A vapor chamber is often referred to as an innovative version of the thermal duct, only it’s not a duct. It is a small metal plate made of heat-diffusive material for pushing molecules away from the processors. The reason it's called a chamber or coffer is because of its enclosed box-like structure that is vacuum-sealed. In vapor chambers, there’s a multi-directional design which is a stark contrast to the straight flow of heat ducts.
How Does it Work?
One of the similarities between thermic channels and vapor coffers is the working fluid that acts as a medium of transport for energy. The water or alcohol absorbs thermal particles, turning them into fumes and spreading across the chamber. After reaching the cool end of the box, the condensation begins dispatching the thermic molecules, leaving liquid residue for recycling. Dissimilar to a thermal pipe, one vapor cooler is enough to cool down your system, even under high thermic stress.
Difference Between Heat Pipes and Vapor Chambers
Features | Heat Pipes | Vapor Chambers |
Cooling Mechanism | One dimensional | Two dimensional |
Thermal Disposal | Energy transfer | Energy spreading |
Dissipation Capacity | For individual components | For multiple components |
Throttle Prevention | Substandard under load | Excellent under load |
Structure | Hollow capillary structure | Pillared capillary structure |
Emission Path | Linear | Even; non-linear |
Thermal Conductivity
In gaming laptops, thermal conductivity refers to pulling energy from a hot component and dispersing it through a cold end. The rule of thumb is: the better the thermal conductivity, the lesser the chances of thermal throttling and system crashes. Also, it prevents your laptop from making that annoying grumbling snarl.
Between pipes and vapor boxes, the latter has better thermal conductivity. The reason is its wide contact area that covers not only the main processors but also the VRAM simultaneously. Plus, it facilitates smooth movements that cause less resistance against the walls.
Design & Construction
Heat channels are long, cylindrical, and narrow, whereas chambers are wide boxes with low pressure. Both feature porous interior walls with mesh coating; however, the vapor box has multiple shafts for support. Due to the pipes being hollow, they can be fitted in any direction, which is impossible for the latter.
The flexibility of the pipes makes it a much more desirable option, especially when direct heat transfer is difficult from one end. Also, the fact that pipes can adapt to complex interiors when coffers can’t instantly makes them more reliable. Now, the neutralizing point is the size of the coffers, which makes them perfect for ultra-slim portable laptops.
Price Factor
From a manufacturer's POV, thermal funnels are the simplest to build. Not only do they use less material (sans pillars), they also require less precision. On the contrary, we have vapor chambers that need precision alignment and adhesive seal.
Add in the mesh lining, and the cost of a coffer only doubles, but one chamber hits right on the nail. Even if one thermic tube isn’t enough, then multiple ones can do the job, causing more demand, something makers want. This is why thermal channels will cost you, a consumer, less than vapor chambers.
Durability & Damage Tolerance
The cylindrical structure of the tubes makes them naturally robust. You must be wondering how the tubes are flexible and robust at the same time. This is possible when the lines are made of copper, which is highly ductile. Ductility means that the pipe can bend or curve without breaking.
The ducts are also tolerant to mechanical stress and do not hinder performance due to minor dents. However, vapor coffers are a lot less tolerant with their plate-like structure. The risk of failure is also high, as you’re just one puncture or leak away from energy overload.
Final Verdict - Which One to Opt for?
With the above differences, you must be able to analyze which cooling system is best suited to your needs. Alright, vapor chambers are better in terms of performance, but what use is it if they won’t last a lifetime? We conclude that one vapor chamber equals approximately five heat funnels, which costs you almost the same.
So, why not go with heat pipes, unless a new modification of the vapor chamber is introduced? Although if you totally want to avoid hot spots in your portable laptop, go with vapor chambers. They’ll keep the temperature under control so you can lead your battles with zero distraction.
