Ever since Lenovo got into the game, they dodged the larger fishes and paved their way past through. It was basically the affordability of their masterpieces that accounts for their success. The tech junkies, hands-down, gave it to them for their competitive specs in their gizmos and the price in which they offer it. This time, they chose to give a shot with the gaming community by proffering them a gaming treat, the Y700. Y700 is the successor of Y40, Y50, and Y70.
Lenovo claims that the IdeaPad Y700 is the next level gaming laptop that lets you conquer anything or anyone with its quad-core processor. With its JBL audio and backlit keyboard, it is powerful and immersive. The technology is cutting-edge, and the graphics are expensive with various gaming peripherals. Lastly, they seem very proud offering the Stagelight; it lets you create music anywhere.
Let us review how far they have come up with the claim!
Design:
When you have the hunk right in front of you, it is pretty sleek. The body is full metal with matte black finish, which is quite captivating at the first glance. It has a texture all over, which gives it that matte finish. However, it catches the fingerprints very often and very quickly, but that can be wiped off easily with a damp cloth or a glass cleaner to retain its classy matte finish all over again.
Build:
It has a pivotal hinge which helps it in opening and closing smoothly; it is not too taut and is durable in the long run (3 months of testing). It is accessible and therefore easy to upgrade. One can change and maintain the RAM cards, slots and both the drives simply by opening the screws.
Keeps you Connected:
The Y700 has 2 USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI-out port, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a Kensington Lock on the right side. Whereas, an AC adapter, a USB 2.0 port, SD reader, 3.5 mm mic+speaker combo jack on the left to keep you connected wherever you go.
Inputs:
The keyboard area is soft to touch and is pretty adaptable. One might find it tricky at first, but that goes away with time. Our team at Paklap.pk found the arrow keys and the shift key to be sitting a little too closely for efficient gaming. We also think that the backlit keyboard idea deserves a round of applause for it is very engaging for the user while using the laptop at night. However, those of you who do not like red color, it is a no-no. The trackpad is smooth, but if you are going to be playing those action games on it, you might need to connect a mouse.
Display:
The screen is full HD anti-glare, or you may opt for Ultra HD anti-glare with its aspect ratio being 16:9. The screen is a frameless one with 1920 x 1080p, so you may fight your opponents up close and personal with no hindrance in between. The matte finish expands to its screen as well which keeps it from displaying visuals that are torturously sharp. It is available in the touch screen as well. The contrasting is amazing; you can see the blackest of blacks, and now none of your enemies go unseen due to the dark scenario in the game. The color scheme is great when you are watching movies or editing your pictures. The frame rate drops when the battery is low, which seemed to happen very spontaneously when playing games with heavier graphics.
Audio:
Lenovo broke a leg with its two JBL red and black speakers positioned on the keyboard panel at the top-right and the top-left. There is also a 3.0 W subwoofer at the bottom. Collectively they create the most awesome sound one can experience, with everything heard pretty loud and clear. While gaming, the speakers sure do create an immersive semblance so we’ll give this one to Lenovo. KUDOS!
Performance:
It runs on a 6th Gen Intel i7 Quad core processor with Windows 10 Home. Must I mention, Windows 10 will no longer be installed for free so consider that as a bonus from Lenovo. The built-in fan keeps things cool from the inside. Tests showed that the 15” touchscreen SKU with 960M could run a demanding game/app on 10 adp and 60 fps at high settings. At low battery, the performance apparently goes down to 30 fps and the fan starts to slow down. The CPU starts to heat up and things do not run as smooth. The RAM is of 16 GB, two of 8 GB each and supports another 16 GB so you can upgrade it to about 32 GB. The hard drive is 1 TB HDD and to protect the system, it comes with preinstalled McAfee software that may be intruding at times. One can choose to get an added 8 GB SSHD but that is not recommended for it will overheat the CPU, and things may get ugly.
Specifications:
The pre-installed Stagelight app lets you create your own music to enjoy on some of the best speakers Paklap.pk has come across so a huge shout out to all the DJs out there. Lenovo Y700 comes with HD 720p, dual array microphone (Intel 3D RealSense Cam [optional]). The battery is of 4 cell 60 WHr which is higher than Y50’s 55WHr and can run for about 6 hours while constantly gaming internet enabled.
The Price:
When you see all of its specifications from the price perspective, it falls in a must-buy list for the gamers. It is only worth a $1000 which is pretty affordable for a gaming laptop. For the upgrades, you have to pay about a $200 extra.
Paklap.pk Verdict:
There are some goods, some okay-it- will-work- fine but nothing awful about the Lenovo Y700 model. Its build is durable and decent, the keyboard is good, the trackpad is okay, the touchscreen function is useful for editing or playing games, but it sometimes becomes unresponsive so using a mouse is preferable. KUDOS to Lenovo and JBL for such a tremendous job on speakers! The GPU is self-cooling which is necessary for gaming, 16GB expandable RAM, the graphic card can run some highly demanding games, and the 1 TB hard drive is sustained by a 60 WHr battery. A worth spending piece!
