iMac VS Previous Generations

Growing up, having an iMac at home was a major flex. Nowadays, if you don’t have a Mac, people will give you googly eyes, not admiringly, but as if you’re fresh out of a cave.  

The evolution of the Mac has been legendary till now. We started with an approximately 40-pound box that looked extremely unpleasant to the eye. Fast forward to twenty-six years, and we have the sleekest model ever, the M4, weighing only 9.74 pounds. 

With the launch of the M4, there has been a strong stir among crowds about whether they should buy it or not. Honestly, manufacturers have often conned the audience by changing the appearance and not the performance in a few of the releases. So this contemplation is evident and justified, but being your favorite tech guru, we have come to the rescue. 

This blog will help you decide for yourself whether the M4 is worth the upgrade or not. 

iMac M4 - Overview

Launched in November 2024, the iMac M4 is one of the most popular releases of Apple to date, even more so than the Slim Unibody Mac. The M4 belongs to the Apple Silicon series, which is the ninth generation of monitors by the company. It closely resembles the Retina Mac, except for the selection of colors. 

This PC has been the talk of the town for quite some time now, the reason being its insanely bold and exquisite color variety. Most Macs stick to the boring white or silver color palette, though the green, yellow, orange, purple, blue, and pink colors of this newcomer have made it seem more ‘approachable’. 

Other aspects of appearance, like the 23.5-inch display of this monitor with 4480x2520 pixel resolution, are huge pros. The nano-textured glass and Retina panel, along with the P3 technology, contribute towards life-like images and videos, offering you an immersive experience. 

Yet, what closes the deal is the performance of the computer, and so it does like a pro, thanks to the genius M4 chipset. Featuring a 16-core Neural Engine, 10-core CPU, and GPU, this device runs at an ultra-fast speed. The 32GB unified memory has a bandwidth of 120GB/s, allowing fast data transfer and efficient storage and usage. Overall, this monitor seems like an all-rounder.

iMac G3

The Mac G3 is soon going to turn 23 years old, making it obsolete/extinct. However, when it first came out, the computer looked like something the aliens would use. This Macintosh had dimensions measuring 15”x15”x 17.1” with a screen size of almost 15 inches diagonally. 

The cathode ray tube display with 1024x768 pixel resolution was thought to be a game-changer back in the day, but now, it’s considered measly. Powered by the G3 processor, the computer presented a user-friendly interface, but it came with consequences like low data transfer speed, buffering, and no secondary display support other than the 800x600 internal display. 

Mini Verdict:

The G3 is a cheap bargain compared to the M4 for obvious reasons. In terms of design, the ultimate predecessor lacks compactness and functionality, and the separate keyboard and mouse are a hassle. The display is also nowhere near the competition, and so is the performance. 

iMac G4

The G4 is a visual treat compared to the previous generation and perhaps the basis for the design of the Apple Silicon M4. Its diagonal screen size of 20 inches is a close call to what we have now in the M4. The 21.3-inch Macintosh has a 1024x768 pixel display with a wide viewing angle and better visuals. 

For the sake of aesthetics, the makers shifted all the cables and ports towards the backside of the machine, cutting off ease of access. As for the processor, its internal hard drive capacity is decent, and performance is also better, although the expansion is limited by three PCI slots. 

Mini Verdict:

Despite the G4 having height adjustability options in the display (something we miss in the M4), it still does not compete with the latter. Performance-wise, the M4 is ten times better, thanks to Thunderbolt 5, via which it achieves a data transfer speed of 120 GB/s. 

iMac G5

With a 17-inch diagonal screen, the G5 is best known for its compact and innovative design, though it’s not as compact as the M4. It is extremely easy to mount on a wall with a mount adapter kit (not included), giving it a plus point. 

The G5 processor allows fast data transfer and file saving in association with the FireWire 400 PCI card. However, the limited PCI slots are restrictive in terms of internal expansion beyond memory. The G5 is the first-ever Macintosh to introduce the iSight video conferencing camera, laying the foundation of the Center Stage camera. 

Mini Verdict:

The G5 was less powerful than most Mac minis at the time, making it evident that it was not eligible to compete against the M4. Also, the lack of an internal modem in the iSight versions is a huge drawback. 

Polycarbonate Intel iMac

This Macintosh was the first collaboration between Apple and Intel and was considered the deal of the decade at that time. The company decided to install Intel processors in their iMacs after gauging the brilliance of the dual-core processors. This device had a white plastic body with a 17-inch display and 1440x900 pixel resolution. 

The highlight of this device was its 2MB L2 cache and 512MB SO-DIMM memory. All in all, it performed way better than most of its competitors and contributed highly towards the company’s reputation. 

Mini Verdict:

The CPU speeds of both the Intel iMac and M4 are commendable in their respective domains; however, the M4 is better. The storage capacity is also larger in the M4 compared to the Intel iMac, which makes the former irrelevant. 

Aluminum iMac

The Aluminum is a revamp of the Polycarbonate and differs mostly in terms of chassis material. Its aluminum, glass, and plastic structure gained instant popularity because of its low maintenance and corrosion resistance. The standard 20-inch display of this computer has a 1680x1050 pixel resolution for clarity and vibrancy.

This design reduces the need for cables and has a ‘cleaner’ look. The processor and performance of this device are pretty much the same as the previous generation, including drawbacks in a particular area. However, the keyboard is revised with shortcut keys and a numeric pad. 

Mini Verdict:

This computer features a DDR3 RAM, which proves to be an asset for it in the long term. Yet, it does not match the battery consumption rate of the M4. 

Unibody iMac

This third Intel-based computer was first recognized because of its slim structure. Its standard size of 21.5 inches is not as popular as the larger 27-inch LCD option. Since it was the first time the manufacturers were installing the I-chip processors in the bigger size variation, this product got all the hype in the market. 

It was also because of the screen size that the memory slots and capacity were doubled. Moreover, the smaller size variation was the first to introduce the Thunderbolt option while the larger size brought forward the Target Display mode. 

Mini Verdict:

The Unibody iMac is a tough competitor of the M4 apart from the processor performance. It offers unique features and can be deemed revolutionary, as M4 is considered transformative, though in different departments. 

Slim Unibody iMac

The Slim Unibody Macintosh is a near replica of the OG Unibody Macintosh, though in a compact build. Its 5mm thinness eliminates the space for an internal SuperDrive, but the upgraded memory specs make up for it. The screen size options are the same as before, although the screen resolution has increased.

What’s new about this monitor is its non-replaceable, soldered memory, which, apart from being durable, can be limited, depending on your needs. The processor options for this Mac include Intel Core i3, i5, and i7, so the performance is determined to vary, but generally, it is better than all previous generations. 

Mini Verdict:

No matter how improved the Slim Unibody Macintosh is, it still doesn’t have the AI feature that assists content creation and seamless functioning. This point weighs heavily and negatively in favour of the Slim Unibody Mac. 

Retina iMac

The Retina Mac emphasizes neither the design nor the performance, but the dapper display of the device. This 5K retina display with a 5120x2880 pixel resolution curates realistically bold and beautiful images with every fine detail. Its Thunderbolt 2 ports can transfer a 4K video without pausing it on the display. 

The processor choice for this monitor is again Intel, which supports DDR4 memory as well as AMD graphics. The Retina Macintosh is a decent upgrade from the middle generations, but not as much of a big deal compared to its predecessor. 

Mini Verdict:

Distinguishing between the Retina and the Slim Unibody iMac can be impossible for a common man based on looks alone. On the other hand, the M4 has its own identity and can be spotted from afar. If you ask us, the Retina is simply boring and monotonous. 

iMac Apple Silicon

The Apple Silicon has three versions - the M1, M3, and M4; consider the difference in cores, and the versions add up to six. Most features, like the display, storage, and accessories, are pretty much the same in these three versions. 

However, despite the standard 8GB unified memory, you can configure up to 16GB and 24GB in the M1 and M3, while the M4 allows up to 32GB configuration. There is a weight difference in the versions, but not significant enough to be noted. But if you favor more Thunderbolt ports (like any normal person), then M4 is the best as it has 4 ports. 

Mini Verdict:

Factually, the M4 chip is faster, smoother, and more efficient than the M1 and M3 chips, so the functioning difference will be there. Another key con of the first two versions is that they don’t have a Center Stage camera and lack color variety. 

Final Verdict

Taking all the previous Macintosh generations and versions (of Apple Silicon) into account, we have come to the conclusion that the M4 is by far the best Mac. It tick marks all the boxes, be it design, display, configuration, or webcam. 

We could ask for some extras in the M4, but in comparison with previous generations, one has to admit that Apple did a wonderful job. It worked on the pain points of its customers from the past, coming up with this genius product that simply excels.
