Google released its innovative smart spectacles naming them 'Google Glass' in April 2013 but failed at the consumer level due to some issues raised by various security concerning institutions and local users.
Google Glass is a pair of smart spectacles with an optical head-mounted display, which shows information on the smartphone-like screen of the spectacles in hands-free mode. The objective of the Google Glass is to provide users a means to connect to the internet and use other Android features such as reminders, Google maps, etc. The major feature that these glasses offer is the recording of videos and capturing of snaps with user’s perspective.
Although the gadget seemed very promising with an exciting prospect, it failed badly because of the criticism over privacy issues. The glasses have the ability to capture pictures and record videos without the third person knowing it. In addition, such type of recording can be used for spying purposes as well. Moreover, it is extremely unethical to record someone without their permission. Some other analysts and experts accused that the Glass will make people even more isolated during any public gatherings, and the screen upfront would block the eye contact between the user and other personalities. Hackers could also manipulate it and disturb the privacy of the user by having a good look into their personal life.
The glasses failed at the consumer level, and the supply to the locals was stopped. However, they got a new life with a new use discovered. Experts have suggested a medical application of these glasses in the emergency cases such as in the situation of earthquakes, hurricanes, or maybe a war site, where a number of injured people lay waiting for someone to arrive to provide them medication. The way in which the Google Glass could facilitate is that the paramedics present on the site could have hands-free video connection with the doctors and experts who currently couldn’t access the site of destruction. A video connection, via which the experts themselves would be able to watch the injuries, will serve as a tool for a better guidance as to which patient needs immediate attention and what is the proper cure to save them from giving up on their life.
During such situations hospitals are full, and a lack of space could cause an upcoming severely injured patient, who needs instant assistance, to not being able to get room to be treated. In such cases, the patients arriving could be prioritized with who needs it first.
If the manufacturers restart the supply of the Google Glass to serve for this purpose, it will be a significant step towards the advancement in the medical field, and unfortunate situations could be tackled more efficiently.
