What is GDDR6 Memory?
Launched in January 2018, the GDDR6 chip has been the lifeline of gaming PCs ever since. What is GDDR7 Memory?
The GDDR7 chip was launched in March 2024; the same year it was standardised for the upcoming NVIDIA GPUs. Its USP is the AI acceleration support that enables parallel computation and management of workloads. It manages all Tensor cores of a graphics processing unit to enhance machine learning.
Version-7 is designed to power the GPU at a blazing fast speed so that it provides high frame rates. It also substantially reduces the buffer time for 8K gaming, thanks to its data transmission efficiency. The most important feature of version-7 is its limited power consumption, which beats even the toughest of its predecessors.

Data Transfer Rate
There’s a lot that goes into the visuals of your games, for example, textures, shadows, light, and reflections. Processing all these things requires frame data that is handled by all versions of GDDR, but at different rates. The Graphics DDR6 has a transfer rate of 16 GBps, whereas the GDDR7 has a higher rate of 32 GBps. Signalling Technology
Both versions of GDDR use the Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) technology for signal generation. The main benefit of PAM is that it enables more information to be transmitted per clock cycle. PAM signalling ensures that the full potential of the GPU is not hindered during gaming because of limited memory bandwidth.
The Graphics DDR6 uses PAM2 or NRZ (Non Return Zero) signalling, whereas GDDR7 uses PAM3 signalling. While PAM2 uses two voltage levels to encode and decode words to binary numbers and vice versa, PAM3 has three voltage levels.
Hence, in GDDR6 chips, 1 1-bit signal is transmitted during each clock cycle. On the other hand, Graphics DDR7 transmits 1.5 bits per clock cycle for ultra-fast gaming.
Design & Construction
The Graphics DDR6 chip has a compact design with a dual-channel architecture, allowing 16-bit data sets to flow through it. According to the design guide, the dielectric constant (area to store energy) is made of glass, resin, and mixed materials. It consumes 1.35V of energy to power the graphics processing unit for performing its tasks.
On the contrary, the manufacturers are loud and proud about the eco-friendly construction of the GDDR7. Not only is it compact, but the Epoxy Moulding Compound construction keeps the temperature of the GPU cool at all times. Partial credit for temperature regulation goes to the low power consumption of only up to 1.2V.
AI Performance
It is a universally accepted fact that AI is a game-changer in gaming. Not just in terms of voice and command recognition, AI is altering visuals, reconstructing images, and getting hands-on with the game while you’re playing it. But such responsive AI performance is restricted to the Graphics DDR7 only. Version-7 supports high-end AI-driven gaming with real-time AI rendering.
As for GDDR6, the AI features are not as upscale. Version-6 supports average AI functioning, like managing primary routine workloads. While yes, it supports machine learning, the deep-learning models are mostly small to medium-sized, with minimum real-time inference provided.
Bandwidth & Gaming Performance
The rule of thumb states that the VRAM bandwidth should be high enough to facilitate smooth frame rates. It determines how fast information is transferred from the VRAM to the GPU after being read or written.
The Graphics DDR6 chip, with a 256-bit bus, can achieve an expected memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s. This bandwidth is ideal for 1080p-1440p gaming performance, and can even perform decently at 4K resolution. However, version-7 has a 1 TB/s band designed to support 8K resolution gaming.
