Acer has been making its name in the gaming industry with its high-end gaming laptops, the good thing about these gaming systems is that Acer doesn’t put you under a lot of financial pressure, most of their gaming systems are affordable yet highly powerful and well built.

Acer Predator Helios 300 is an addition to the same line of gaming systems. Coming with the latest hardware that lets you play the latest games with high frame rates, without cutting your pocket.

Aggressive Design of Acer Helios 300

Every gaming laptop developer is trying to get ahead in terms of design by introducing more curvy and bolder designs. Acer also makes sure that the Predator gives you a design that gives a strong competition to other developers.

The big predator logo and the two red lines are instantly noticeable on the first look, the big vents, and the overall angular design gives it a rather aggressive look, you can judge its power pretty much by just looking at it.

The back panel hosts cooling vents, with black and red colors; which has become sort of like a standard for most gaming laptops.

There are also enough ports to get you connected, two Type A ports, one USB 3.1 Port, head phone jack etc. Although it has a 3.1 port that is without the thunderbolt support, still it gives up to 10GB/s transfer rates.

The lower side houses plenty of air vents to keep your system cool while playing high-end games, the speakers are also located on the bottom and sound comes out from two different sides on the bottom.

Overall, the design is fairly good, with great building materials, and a real aggressive design with sharp edges, which you would expect from a gaming laptop.

High-Level Performance, Better Cooling

The Acer predator really is a killer in terms of performance. There are different configurations for you to choose from, the Core i7 variant comes with 32GBs of DDR4 RAM, a powerful NVidia GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of dedicated memory.

The gaming beast cuts through most heavy games with high frame rates. High-end games like Bioshock, Need For Speed Most Wanted etc. are playable at high frame rates and with high graphic settings.

You might not use this laptop for your normal tasks, but if you do then you should expect a real buttery smooth experience. The latest Core i7 Processor handles anything you through at it with ease, and the Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics lets you play any game you want with detailed graphics and high frame rates. 32GB of RAM is enough to compete with most other gaming laptops, and with the price tag of $1099, Predator would be a clear winner.

Cooling is often an issue with new gaming laptops when things get intense and the laptop gets under pressure, there’s usually an uncomfortable level of heat that gets generated in the result. Acer, fortunately, improved its cooling systems, having thinner and a greater number of blades per fan, and big cooling vents, at the back and bottom allow the Predator to push out air at a higher rate. Its fans have 35% more cooling power according to Acer.

Display of Predator Helios 300

The display is not very impressive, although most of the games are fairly good looking thanks to the Nvidia GTX 1060 Graphics Card, the screen it self-doesn't offer that much. It only supports a 70% of the sRGB color spectrum which is quite low especially when compared to other gaming laptops.

The brightness is also not very good and will make you struggle to operate in bright outside light, but the display is not all bad, the contrast is pretty good and there’s no light bleeding.

Not perfect, but the display is fairly adequate for watching movies and playing games.

Poor Battery of Acer Predator Helios 300

The battery in Acer Predator Helios is the only 48wh, pretty low for such a powerful machine. It would give you about 3-4 hours on normal usages, like watching movies but doesn’t even last an hour when the laptop is put under pressure, playing demanding games for instance.

The battery in gaming laptops is usually not very strong due to overly powerful hardware, but still, Acer could’ve done better than 48 Wh.

Bottom Line

Acer Predator Helios 300 is giving a really tough competition to other gaming laptop manufacturers with its low price and high-end hardware. Particularly the Nvidia GTX 1060 Graphics Card is not available in this price range in perhaps any gaming laptop.
