Choose your AF according to the situation and the subject you are capturing

Single-point AF

When you are looking for a portrait quality shot, you can select from Nikon D7100’s any one of the 51 points in focus and it will give you precise detailing of the subject. When creating portraits, this can be done by focusing on the eye.

Dynamic-area AF

This AF is especially useful for moving objects. Again, select one of the 51 points as your focus point, if the subject moves, the rest of the points surrounding the focus point will be captured in detail. You may select from 9, 21 or 51 depending on the movement of the subject. It has AF-dedicated CMOS sensor, which is useful when carrying out motion/live photography or when shooting movies. Nikon D7100 shoots at 7 fps for high-speed continuous shooting, while when recording a movie it can shoot up to 30 fps. 

3D subject tracking

This engages all the 51 points, all cross-type AF points; be it vertically, horizontally and diagonally. It proves useful when the subject is moving unpredictably. Thanks to the scene recognition system it tracks the subject terrifically well.

Auto-area AF

In this mode, Nikon D7100 identifies the main subject and focuses on it while distinguishing from the background. The scene recognition system identifies the skin tone of human subjects and ensures focus on it.
