On 7th January 2016, in CES 2016 world saw the future of charging methodology for cellular phones, tablets, laptops and notebooks. At the WiTricity suite, we witnessed wireless charging technology used for charging Dell laptops. This might be the new hot topic for the year.

The instant Dell laptop was placed on the charging mat; it started charging wirelessly. WiTricity officials said that about 30 W power was being transferred to the laptop. WiTricity charges the device at the same speed as does the wired charger. The power transfer rate of WiTricity is also the same as that of a wired charging device.

The first person in the history to propose the idea of wireless power transfer was Nikola Tesla.

What led to WiTricity technology being invented?

WiTricity technology story started when Professor Marin Soljačić was woken up the sixth time in one month with the sound of his mobile beeping to signal low battery. That was a life-changing moment, the moment when he thought: “There is electricity wired all through this house, all through my office —EVERYWHERE. This phone should take care of its own charging!”. To make this idea a reality Soljačić started thinking and experimenting. He wanted to achieve wireless power transfer in a way that the power is only transferred between the power source and the device to be charged with least power being lost while the electrons interact with other living things like humans or pets or non-living objects such as wood, marble or walls.

With many coupled resonators being considered the team at WiTricity practically focused on magnetically coupled resonators. They worked on a system of two electromagnetic resonators that were coupled by their magnetic fields. The results of their experiments showed that high electromagnetic coupling could be achieved over distances that are much longer than the size of the resonating objects.

First successful experiment of WiTricity technology

Two copper coils were utilized and each was a self-resonant system. Each coil had five turns. Each turn was 60 cm in diameter. One of the coils was connected to an AC power source while a 60 W bulb was attached to the second one. The bulb was lighted at a distance from 2.5 cm to over 2.5 meters. This proved the system to be highly efficient. Obstacles were also placed between the two coils to show how magnetic field generated by changing electric field can pass through obstacles like bricks, metallic objects, and wood in its path. The coils were designed to oscillate at the frequency of 9.9 MHz and wavelength of 30 meters.

This experiment was first published in 2007 in the Journal of Science. The same basics were used to charge Dell laptops in CES 2016.

Launch of WiTricity Technology

The successful experiment led to the start of WiTricity technology. WiTricity technology was instigated in 2007.

Benefit of WiTricity Technology

The Benefits of WiTricity Technology are as follows:

1) The current wireless technologies other than WiTricity such as Qi require the user to place charging coils accurately on top of one another. While WiTricity technology only requires the user to put the device to be charged on the top of charging mat.

2) WiTricity technology is safe to use. It utilizes a non-radiating mode of energy transfer by using the Magnetic field. Magnetic field interacts very weakly with living organisms. As per a research, the waves from smartphones people use are 100 times more dangerous than the magnetic field of WiTricity.

3) WiTricity technology can produce power ranging from few mW to several kW. Thus, it can be used to charge a large number of devices around us.

4) The efficiency of charging a device by using WiTricity technology can be greater than 95%. However, this greatly depends on the size of power supply source and device to be charged along with the distance between the two.

5) The technology used by the company allows it to shape the magnetic field. This makes wood, concrete, glass, plastics and other such materials transparent to the magnetic field. The magnetic field can also wrap around some metal objects. This feature allows devices to be charged through tables, kitchen tops, and even furniture.

6) Except for charging the devices by using WiTricity technology, it can also be employed in the military. The batteries required to power night vision goggles in the helmets of soldiers can be removed, and backpacks that have WiTricity tech in them can be used as a source of energy for these night vision goggles. The charging of batteries of the pack can be done while the soldier is being transported in a Humvee.

In short, the users can imagine their desks or kitchen shelves to be chargers and the best of Dell laptop deals can be availed from Paklap.pk with company guarantees. With the technology advancing, one can even hope that they will enter the house and their devices will start charging automatically.
