Intel has launched a latest and updated version of their processors, this 8th Generation update is dubbed “Coffee Lake” and brings with it many changes related to performance and battery optimizations. Since the official launch in October, many laptop manufacturers have started using these latest CPUs in their newest models, companies like HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Toshiba, MSI, Asus etc. have released a number of different models with 8th Generation Processors.

Changes in 8th Generation

Since the last version, the 7th Generation “Kaby Lake”, Intel has been working on improving its processors; both in terms of performance as well as energy consumption.

In the 7th Generation processors, Intel had incorporated a smaller design which in turn consumed less power while giving the same powerful performance, which had quite a pleasant effect on your laptop’s battery life. But, performance wise, there weren’t many changes, this new series of processors, however, have many noticeable changes.

First of all, the number of Cores has been increased, the smaller Core i3 Processor now comes in Quad Core version, the Core i5 and Core i7 both come in either Quad Core or with 8 Cores. It has improved the performance of Intel’s processors to quite a noticeable extent.

Apart from the cores, the number of threads has also been increased.

Another significant change was done in clock frequencies, the bass frequencies have been decreased but that doesn’t have a negative effect on performance because Intel has increased the higher frequency numbers.

Simply speaking, where a processor from previous generations would work on a base frequency of 2.8GHz and have a maximum range of 3-3.2GHz, the new 8th Gen CPUs have lower frequencies like 1.8 and 1.9GHz, but the Intel Turbo Boost technology (2.0) makes them make up for it by boosting the peak frequencies to higher number like 4 and 4.2GHz.

This change is beneficial in two ways, first - it lets your laptop work with comparatively less energy when you’re not doing anything heavy, as the processors are operating on a lower frequency, naturally, they consume a low amount of energy.

But, when you need more power, for instance, when you’re gaming or working on some software which can be classified as heavy or stressing (for the CPU), then the Turbo Boost can automatically increase the clock frequencies up to 4.2GHz, which gives a significant power boost.

All these things happen behind the scenes, without needing you to do any configurations etc. on your part.

45 Percent faster than previous Generations
According to officials at Intel, the new 8th Generation CPUs are about 45% faster as compared to a processor of the previous generation.

Everything, from everyday web browsing tasks to heavier jobs like professional level video editing etc., has been improved.

Image editing and such other tasks take significantly less time now (according to a test, a latest 8th Gen System has the ability to edit a 4K video in just under three minutes, while the same video; if operated on a five-year-old system - would take more than 45 minutes to complete).

The increased number of cores and threads also make quite a lot of difference in performance, especially for smaller processors like the Core i3 one which comes with 4 cores now.
